The city is a song,
Skyscraper tips climbing to crescendo highs,
A forte horn's blare, a manhole's hiss, that stranger's appraising stare
All help shape the noisy symphonic form
Gliding con moto through polluted air.

Ripe with dulce tones: like
A friend's sweet alacrity and unwavering support,
Sounding clear and true. Fresh like yesterday
Even though long gone,
A gentle heartbeat that pulses and thrums
Fading slowly amidst ever-towering walls of concrete.
The city is a whispered song, pianissimo lures, trailing off
Daring, winking, inexorably beckoning
At slow andante paces.
Promises of greatness tucked quietly into loaded moments
That haven't even happened yet.
A few spectacular seconds of courage
Curled tightly, into new smuggled spots, waiting
To be unfurled once more
By a city that you thought you already knew.
Within the city's prickly confines
A melody soars, clear and bright
Molto rubato, at a rhythmic pace
For you to keep up.
For you to feed your heart,
For you to splinter your heart.
And curiously, for you to always dream again
For as long as your insides, now made into rough steely wool, can hold out.
For this is a dreamer's city: tattered and abrasive, yet fiercely celebrated as
A city of most uncanny melodies.
Broken, whole, coursing so strong
An anthem forged together from this city's many harmonies
Of countless songs.
