Cheerful Chilly.

And now a break from Shoetopia 2013 coverage to show you a few cheerful things that have been keeping me warm during these chilly days: this off-the-shoulder, buttery yellow sweater by DRIFT; a golden triple-chain necklace (that I'm wearing here as a headband) by Boom, and some free caramel java to hep keep warm. -- Plus aren't these free tights a find? I luhs this modern geometric cutout pattern, which worked so nicely as a stylistic foil against these Victorian lace-up boots by Beetlebones (you'll find these at Collabor88; even amidst all your shoe choices this month, these meticulously-textured boots are a true gem -- 'specially if you're a tall, lace-up boots kinda girl like moi).


And here's a better look at this youthful "Elvi" skin by Glam Affair, which is totes the epitome of "fresh-faced" (plus the subtly glossy, utterly pouty lipsticks on this particular skin are just gorge). Some free cinnabon earrings, a sprinkling o' frex + some shiny, clear eyes (these, of course, are by Ikon) and I look just as innocent as can be. Hehe.

Now here's the annoying thing about supercute li'l squirrel aviators: they just luhs to brag about their uber-cool, miniature flying spaceships, that no one else (non-squirrel, I mean) can ever see. -- Take my good friend Charlie here: today he was boasting all over the place that he owns not just one of these super special spaceships, but three. Now that's just mean.

This newest round of Collabor88 has the notably whimsical theme of Steampunk, and the A+ creator lineup has interpreted this to mean many versatile stylings (not just necessarily futuristic Victorian). I particularly loved these this retro cutout minidress (which could easily pass as Old Hollywood glam as well), and don't even get me started about these utterly fab doorbells by Intrigue Co.: I just had to incorporate 1 of these into my look today in some way. -- And 'cuz life is just better with freebies, both my striped 'n bowtied nails + this whimsically antler'ed gaslamp are completely free, courtesy of a new hunt that you can read about here.

Speaking of Steampunk, has everyone read The Infernal Devices? It's better-written-than-usual bubblegum tween lit that I devoured this summer, then forgot about, and then re-discovered on my phone last week that totes got me into the Steampunk mood. -- Too bad this author's other movie rather bombed at the box office, but these prequels are so much better than that one, anyway. Now you have your next bathroom reading!

A Li'l Surrealism Helps to Keep Us Sane.

Did you know that if you announce loudly that you have both milk + carrots lying around, every kitty + bunnie in the region will come a-hootin' + a-hollerin'? Well, neither did I.

These furry friends are new by Ohmai + come accompanied by mochi ice creams + other yummie things; the lovely shading, exquisite contouring + organically plump shaping are creator Anya Ohmai's signature (her lush work is a big reason why the build at The Arcade is so striking as well).  It's tres exciting that these cute critters (+ the animated koi fish purse I'm showing above!) are available at the 5th installment of Designers United, an event which drummed up a huge amount of buzz during its last tenure on the grid years ago, known for its off-the-beaten-path event themes + also for getting some of SL's most celebrated creators to simply run with it. The items at this newest "Surrealism" round are bold, edged with fantasy + even just a hint of darkness; you can get a good feel by checking out the official Flickr group here (I love that you can find established fashion designers like Onyx LeShelle of Maitreya making eerie, skeleton bird strap-on stilts + even a ghostly head cap for this event).


Btw in case you haven't visited Truth recently, you need to know that all of his new hairs are now  controlled via a simple HUD; meaning, zero inventory clutter (O YEAH!) + a luxurious 1-click ease of color change (+ he's even re-incorporated some of my old personal color faves, like Espresso + Swedish, back into the mix). -- I also had to show you a side view of this week's new + impeccably detailed "Anessa" style -- check out the soft mini-bun gathered softly at the nape of the neck, and the little pieces falling just below it; the uber-feminine double-leaves headband make this an utterly smex 'do. I've only said this about a bazillion times, but the texturing on Truth hair is 1 of the most polished things you can get your avi into on the grid. -- How do I know? 'Cuz Photoshop's lighting effects do not lie.

Meanwhile, as we move more staunchly into Fall's chilly climes, there's always ample time in SL to dream of Springtime, short dresses + plastic-heeled leather platform booties. Oh, and free strawberry tartlets, too.

I hope you'll find time to go and support Lu Waffle and all of her talented crew who have helped the Designers United event come together. It's a rare thing to see fashion events -- or truly, any event -- rally around art for Art's sake; besides which, the push for Art (whatever that means, to each of us) is something too often neglected, 'specially for us busy working folks; even the concept of pursuing something artistic often becomes something too nebulous or impractical to truly embrace. It's easy, then, to come to Designers United to check out how innovative ideas can co-mingle seamlessly with fashion and home; perhaps you'll experience a Rene Magritte moment of your own. (I feel compelled to add that a li'l Surrealism is just part of the everyday here in NYC, since RL is definitely stranger -- and infinitely less predictable -- than fiction).
