In Memoriam.

As anyone who's spent any time in SL knows, our metaverse can be a curious place. The grid, which itself is ever-changing, plays host to a strange permanence: at any time, you can login, exist in an entirely orchestrated environment, and somehow feel that things will never change. As we all know, this is hardly true; and this summer, the SL community lost 1 of its most extraordinary artists and creators -- and a great believer in this little blog -- creator Squinternet Larnia of Donna Flora.

I've been waiting to write about the memorial garden that's been built in Squinternet's honor since I wasn't quite sure what to say about it, or how to talk meaningfully about Squint's passing. I finally visited the garden last week, and I can safely say this: it's a very peaceful, serene place, a gentle nod to Squinternet's rustic countryside build that she previously created in her spectacular Bonin SIM, and someplace that you can imagine Squinternet herself would have enjoyed very much. With just a hint of flourish in the pouffed-out tiers on the garden's back walls, small whitewashed cubbyholes for lit candles to cast their sparkling, delicate lights like little jewels, and pastel pink lotus blossoms floating in the azure garden pools, there are traces of Squinternet's love of color, beauty and elegance all over the place. It made me deeply sad that she would never lay eyes on it.

You still have time to visit Squinternet's beautiful Memorial Garden here (I believe her friends are hoping it will stay until the end of the month). Even if you never knew her, you can still enjoy the tranquility of these gardens, and perhaps say a little prayer of peace for the great lady that inspired them.

The Rarest of Gems.

It's truly rare in any life that you get to witness exceptional kindness and a concerted effort towards helping others, but this week we are all lucky enough to witness precisely such a thing. Donna Flora creator Squinternet Larnia has been battling a terminal illness, and her friend (and very great lady of SL) Cajsa Lilliehook has organized an event to help Squinternet pay for the frighteningly expensive treatments than can prolong her life. You can read more about Squinternet's battle on the official event blog here; you can do even more by attending the Love Donna Flora event + dropping whatever you can (even if just $1L) into a donations box (they are located on every single vendor cart); or buying anything at the new Donna Flora location here; or just taking the time to drop Squinternet a quick note on the Love Donna Flora website here (Cajsa mentioned to me that Squinternet reads the event blog daily, usually after her doctor's visits, to help lift her spirits).

The Love Donna Flora event opens today, and in a moving testament to how deeply things like mutual respect, admiration and empathy are felt in our li'l virtual fashionista world, over 130 creators have come together to make something for the event, with most of the vendors set at 100% donation to Squinternet. -- And if that wasn't enough reason to visit, you've simply got to take a look at the ZOMG wow factor build, which transports you deep into the rustic Italian countryside, bursting with looming cypress trees, rows upon rows of wooden vineyards + shabbily crumbling walls, so artfully put together by smexeh blogger lady Felicity Blumenthal, who I think should take up a SL career in landscaping (don't you sooo want her doing your back yard? I do)!

Many, many thanks to Cajsa Lilliehook for putting together this truly special event, and to all of the creators and organizers who have helped make it happen.

And to Squinternet: your creations have been such a joy to photograph and style over the years, and you have been such a cherished amica. Donna Flora will always be special to SLexy Fashionista, since it will never be forgotten that you were such a strong supporter of this li'l blog over the years -- even in our earliest days, when no one else was -- and you were a big reason why our love of SL grew into anything at all. Most importantly, it is such an indescribable privilege to know such a great friend, artist and person. Everyone here wishes you our very, very best in your arduous fight; please think of us to help boost your daily resolve. Across metaverses and continents, we send you all of our love, always.
